Dr. Julie Gerberding is a world-renowned infectious disease and public health expert. As former Director of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2002 to 2009, she is well-versed in and passionate about acting with purpose and urgency to meet public health needs.
Dr. Julie Gerberding is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Patient Officer, Strategic Communications, Global Public Policy, and Population Health at Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) , where she also has responsibility for the Merck for Mothers programme and the Merck Foundation. She leads efforts to engage with patients and patient organisations, and builds new initiatives designed to accelerate MSD’s ability to contribute to improve population health. In her previous role as president of Merck Vaccines, Dr. Gerberding helped make the company’s vaccines increasingly available and affordable to people in emerging markets and some of the most resource-limited countries in the world. She serves on the Board of Directors of Hilleman Laboratories.

Wellcome’s Infection Challenge
Professor Gordon Dougan focuses on the genetic analysis of host/pathogen interactions during infection. He has worked extensively in both academia and industry, making important contributions in the field of vaccinology, working to improve vaccine delivery to poorly resourced regions.
He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Biology Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences and is an EMBO member. He established the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection at Imperial College London and was the Board of Management representative for Pathogen Research for 10 years (2004-2014) at the Sanger Institute.

Anchor Panel Session: Role of Vaccines in Global Public Health
Professor Benjamin Seet is the Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer of Education and Research with the National Healthcare Group, a public healthcare group that includes the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID), which is at the forefront in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. He was also appointed Executive Director of the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) in 2012 and was previously with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) where he was overseeing its biomedical research institutes, centres and consortia that engage in scientific and translational R&D spanning the biopharmaceutical, medical technology, food and nutrition, and consumer care industries.
Distinguished Lecture: Practical Approaches to Support Public Health
Professor Gagandeep Kang is an esteemed scientist known for her research on enteric infectious diseases in impoverished communities. She is currently Executive Director at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad and Head of the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. She has published over 200 papers in national and international journals, and is an Associate Editor for PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases and for Tropical Medicine and International Health. Prof. Kang also sits on the editorial board of Scientific Reports and is on several review committees for national and international research funding agencies. Prof. Kang is a member of the WHO’s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety and the Immunization and Vaccine Implementation Research Advisory Committee and chairs the Immunization Technical Advisory Group for the WHO’s Southeast Asian Region. She is also a board member of Hilleman Laboratories.
As enteric diseases exert the highest burden of disease in countries worldwide, Prof. Kang’s research and insights on rotaviral infections will highlight the importance of surveillance, healthcare professional training, and practical approaches to limit their impact.
