Cholera

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Infection occurs through consumption of food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria1. The World Health Organization estimates that there are between 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of RO cholera each year, with as many as 143 000 deaths worldwide2.

Hilleman Laboratories’ oral cholera vaccine, Hillchol, has completed pre-clinical development and is currently in Phase II clinical development. The vaccine is single strain which significantly reduces the cost of vaccine production3.The vaccine technology has been out-licensed.
